Certified dentists in Mexico have 2-6 more years of specialist dental school. You want to avoid non-certified general dentists (like my ex-wife Dr. Rosa Pena of Angels Touch Dental aka Cabo Soft Dental Care) unless you need basic dentistry such as cleaning, drilling and filling.

There's this problema of Board Certified dentists in Mexico vs. non-certified general dentists in Mexico
In Mexico general dentists are permitted to attempt advanced dentistry learning as they go at their unsuspecting patient's expense. Mexican scary dental stories result from non-certified general dentists attempting advanced dentistry they are not trained for. This occurs in the US on occasion and in Mexico as a matter of routine.
In the US dentists who attempt specialist dentistry when not certified lose their licenses or go to jail. Mexico lacks consumer protection laws regarding this unethical and unsafe practice.
Take advice from the American AND Mexican dental associations and see a certified dentist in Mexico for your crowns, implants, cosmetic dentistry, oral surgery etc. (They cost the same as less-skilled general dentists anyway)
